HE'S BACK!! Garth Ennis Returns to Punisher!!

HE'S BACK!!

You heard right! Garth Ennis, critically acclaimed author of Preacher, Hellblazer, and and most notably for me, The Punisher, returns to the character he brought back from the outer reaches of obscurity! Ennis was quoted on ComiXology's podcast that a new mini series was in the works for sometime next year. AND I COULDN'T BE HAPPIER!!

The Punisher was always one of my favorite characters, and the way Ennis wrote Frank Castle was bar none the best I'd ever read! He turned Frank from a black-tights-and-white-gloves-n'-boots-wearing goon with a gun into a literal force to be reckoned with. Right from the beginning of his run on the character back in 2000 with "Welcome Back Frank," the author revitalized The Punisher by taking him back to the stories that worked for him first - taking down street scum- Criminals like drug dealers, murderers, thieves, the mafia - they were all target practice! The character was still under the Marvel Knights imprint at the time, which was intended to be darker, noir stories with a grim n' gritty feel to them. Other characters under the headline included Daredevil, Cloak and Dagger, Dr.Strange, Moon Knight, and even Spider-man once in a while, with Daredevil seeing the most success out of them all.

The Punisher's popularity soared, as legions of Ennis fans, still salivating for something from the author ever since his Preacher series had concluded, flocked to the title each month. As the story arcs got darker and more violent, Frank ran afoul of the NYPD and even other superheroes who didn't quite see eye to eye with Frank's brand of justice. It quickly became obvious that the Marvel Knights just couldn't contain the character, or its author, any longer, and so after a 12-issue maxi series and a 36-issue run, Marvel made the best decision they ever could have for the character - they took -- the safety -- OFF!!

The Punisher found a natural home amongst the otherwise unknown Marvel MAX line, a no-holds-barred R-rated title where Frank, and especially Garth Ennis, could really cut loose!! The MAX line took Frank down to levels of street scum so low you'd need a microscope to see them. He put shotguns in the mouths of child killers and blew their squishy brains all over the friggin' wall! He disemboweled human sex slave traffickers and tied them to a tree with their own entrails! He cursed! He fucked! He bled! He was real! And he wasn't taking no shit from nobody!! This was the realest, greatest depiction of the character the fans could have ever hoped for, and now finally, the man responsible for it is coming back!

Garth Ennis is writing a Punisher story. Things are good.
