Benedict Cumberbatch Rumored For Doctor Strange

Recently, Marvel Studios were in talks with Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix to play Doctor Strange in phase three of Marvel's cinematic universe. It was first rumored during Comic-Con International in July, but no deals have been struck. On a short list of Marvel Studios picks for The Sorcerer Supreme, Benedict Cumberbatch is said to be at the top for negotiations.

Benedict Cumberbatch has been a fan favorite choice for quite some time, complete with internet petitions to Marvel to make it happen. The Sherlock actor addressed the initial rumors when asked by E! Online in July 2014, and did not shoot them down outright. He coyly laughed off not knowing about the rumors, and stated that anything could happen.

With Marvel Studios inviting press and hinting at a super secret surprise announcement during tomorrows special event at El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, anything COULD happen, and Benedict Cumberbatch being cast as Doctor Strange could be one of them.

Doctor Strange is to be directed by Scott Derrickson, produced by Marvel's Kevin Feige, with a script by Jon Spaihts. The first draft of the script was penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. The film is scheduled for a November 4th, 2016 release.

Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in the early 1960's. He first appeared in Strange Tales #110 in July 1963.

Doctor Strange is a brilliant neurosurgeon who was unable to conduct surgery after a car accident damaged his hands. Too egotistical to accept continuing as a teacher, mentor and consultant at the hospital, he goes on a long journey to fix his hands. After exhausting funds and spiraling into poverty and homelessness, an opportunity sends him on a new path, leading him to become The Sorcerer Supreme; world protector from magical and mystical threats.
