2) Amazing Spider-Man 550/ Writer: Marc Guggenheim/ Penciler: Salvador Larroca

3) The Goon 21/ Writer & Penciler: Eric Powell

1- As you would guess, Captain Marvel's story involves Skrulls and Kree. This 5-issue run ties in to the secret invasion arc which is currently infiltrating a whole host of Marvel titles. Captain Marvel had been dead for years and then all of a sudden popped up again in true comic book fashion. In this Marvel Universe day and age, the natural hesitation was to assume that Marv-el was a skrull. Marv-el has amnesia and can only remember bits and pieces of his past. In the previous issue, Marv-el and Ms. Marvel are attacked by Cobalt Man (which to me sounds like he should be a giant crayon). Here’s the hitch; Cobalt Man is dead. But how? How can you fight a dead guy? Ah. SPOILER: At the end, Marv-el visits Cobalt Man in prison who turns out to be a SKRULL who makes the assertion that Marv-el is one too. Da-da-dum. Story is good so far. Weeks’ art is good old fashion comic book variety.

2- Yet a new (or not so new) Spidey villain is established. The name is annoying; Menace? Why not call him “Bad-For-You-If-He-Were-To-Get-Too-Close-Man”. Art work is good, I always liked Larroca's work. Nothing special about the story though. If the episode premiered thirty years ago, sans the registration act, you wouldn't know the difference. ASM, much like Countdown is really not worth wasting precious airtime. The best thing about these issues are the Spider-Man quips.

3- What can you say about Goon? In the wise words of Adam, it actually doesn't suck! In fact, Goon is awesome! In this issue he fights a giant transvestite (who hasn't right?) right when he was about to blowed up an old burlesque house. The language that Powell uses is always great. It makes me feel like I'm back in the 1930's. Them were the days. You could sleep on the fire-escape and not worry about murderers, looters or Vikings.
